Home lifestyle decoration More than 350 volunteers rehabilitate houses in the summer
Just a Change organizes Camp In, – more than 350 volunteers rehabilitate houses in the summer – the summer project, that between the months of July and August, promotes 11 summer camps to rehabilitate 55 private houses, of 100 beneficiaries, changing the reality of those who live there.
Camp In takes place in several Portuguese municipalities, bringing together town and parish councils, construction companies and local suppliers, volunteers (national and international), partner companies, and the local community, promoting collaboration for a common good.
This is the 7th edition of a project that began in 2015 and has already increased its volume of intervention by 800%. This is a work full of impact that changes the reality of those who live in them.
In addition to the usual focus on improving housing conditions, this summer works have several innovative projects: installation of several photovoltaic panels that allow greater energy efficiency, in addition to ensuring greater comfort for its inhabitants. The remaining works range from the construction of integral roofs, new bathrooms, and the installation of hot water systems.
The rural context is full of social isolation and deep poverty, which affects the housing context. The camps have allowed Just a Change to act in areas of the national territory where it would be difficult to implement housing rehabilitation projects throughout the year.
This innovative way of acting brings enormous benefits to the project which has allowed it to achieve its main result: bringing comfort, dignity, and hope to those who do not have a house worthy of being lived in by a human being.
Another positive externality of this project, besides the social cohesion generated in the local community, is the promotion and enhancement of the territory, reinforcing the identity of those who live there by bringing dignity, hope, and joy to its inhabitants.
The identity of the localities is maintained by respecting the traditional architectural features and their recovery promotes improvements in terms of energy efficiency.
The youth of the volunteers brings a new lease of life to areas of the country with an aging population. This union between young and old results in an inexhaustible source of joy, energy, and sharing of stories between generations.
What is Just a Change?
It is a non-profit association dedicated to rehabilitating homes for people in housing poverty. They mobilize volunteers to help bring hope and joy, transforming homes into places worth living in. Just a Change works to restore housing dignity to families and individuals most in need.
Just a Change’s work also has an impact on a larger scale within the community and society in general. Improving the living conditions and habitability of the population has a direct impact on reducing poverty and crime, as well as bringing significant improvements in public health and energy efficiency.
Rehabilitating a house offers its inhabitants a new starting point for their lives. A rehabilitated house guarantees them a better quality of life and the impact of having a renovated house directly affects their daily lives in terms of health, safety and hope.
